I am trying to write a bin onto a 27c256 chip and I keep getting this error

The chip signature doesn't fit the selected chip! Cancel, Retry or Ignore?
Expected chip signature bytes: 01h 10h
Read chip signature bytes: FFh FFh

If I ignore this error then I get

"Programming error at address: 0 / 0h
Expected: 01h, read: FFh"

I am very new to this.

the Bin files are made for these chips.

I have been using a new AM27c256-55DC eprom

the factory chip this bin came off was an AT27c256-70PU

as far as I know the only differences in these chips are the AM chip is a different brand and the 55 means that it is a litter faster max read time. otherwise they should be the same yet I keep getting this error with new chips.

This is with a Batupo bx32.

any ideas?

Thanks
Mike

case 1:
the chip is erased o.k. then all bytes are "FF"
but the programming doesn't work
may be there is no programming power

case 2:
there is a problem with the Ground_Pin of the chip

Why would there be no programming power? could this be because I am using a Laptop vs a desktop PC?

The chip is new, and when read all bytes are FF

So what might be wrong with the ground pin? and how would I go about checking?

Thank you

Hi,

it looks like the chip to be programmed is not powered. So all bits are
read as 1 through pullupresistors. Can you check this?

I am very new to this kind of work

How would I check this?

Dear Mike,

The Batronix BX32 will power the device properly if it is inserted correctly. This won't be a problem.

Each chip has a specific chip signature. The BX32 reads the chip signature out and compares it with the chip specification. The correct AM27C256 signature bytes are 01h (=AMD) and 10h (=27C256). As the error message shows, the programmer gets the signature bytes FFh FFh from the chip.

- Please check that you inserted the chip correctly. Have a look at the Prog-Express software on the left side. You will see a lever socket and the correct chip position there. The chip pin 1 must be located in the left upper corner.
- Are you using a PLCC-DIP adapter? If yes, please note that you need a PLCC32-DIP28 adapter. A PLCC32-DIP32 adapter won't work.
- Which Prog-Express software version and which BX32 firmware version do you use? You can download the actual version at: http://www.progshop.com/shop/software/prog-express/index.html

Andre

Prog Expess is V 2.1.5
Firmware is 2.05

I have matched the chip up to the picture on the side with the notch in chip towards the top and the bottom of the chip at the very bottom of the socket. I have tried the chip in every possible way to see if maybe there was something I am missing but otherwise the hardware seems very simple and makes sense how to install the chip.

I am using no adapters just the chip into the std socket that is built into the BX32.

Dear Mike,

The software and firmware versions are up to date. You insert the chip correctly and you don't need an adapter because you are using the DIP/DIL chip package (Adapters are only necessarily when using chips in SMD packages like SOIC, TSOP or PLCC).

Maybe the chip is defect. Do you have other chips for testing reasons? Does the signature check work at other chips? Please note that if you inserted the chip the other way around you may damage it.

Andre

I have a feeling it might be the BX32 that is bad, or I must be doing something very wrong.

I used the same chip on my friends $30 burner and it works just fine and burned the same bin file on the same chip I have been trying to do it on

Either way there should be almost no setup needed for this burner.

I let it auto detect the programmer

and then pick the chip out of the list

load the bin file
and then hit burn

nothing fancy or special that should be needed to be done.

Hi!

Could you please try other chips? If other chips work well, it could be a chip settings problem in the database. If other chips won't work also, it could be a handling problem or a defect programmer.

However we have nearly zero defect BX programmers the last years. If any problems occur there is usually a handling mistake or a wrong chip setting in the database.

Please recheck that you insert the chip correctly and please try with an other chip also.

André

I will dig up a few different model chips that are compatible with the Bin/ECU I am making it for and give it a shot as soon as I can.

Thanks

i have the same problem with my BX 32

no problem at all with 27C128 ...

i had tested with differents 27c256, same problem ....

I fixed the problem with mine, used ather set of chips to burn on and the problem went away. Turns out those amd chips are junk... Guess I should of known better. Either way the atmel chips burn just fine

thanks

do you have a link to buy budget eprom ?
